People do not just rely on clothes and shoes when it comes to fashion anymore, they prefer something more permanent. The most permanent fashion statement a person can make is with a tattoo. Although not all tattoos are bought with fashion in mind, some resemble certain aspects of a person's life or other people who they consider special enough to have their likeness etched into their skin for a lifetime. “Miami Ink” has them all and then some.

“Miami Ink” is a television show on TLC (the learning channel). Jumping onto the reality show bandwagon, “Miami Ink” is a reality series filmed on location at a tattoo parlor called 305 Ink in Miami Beach. TLC premiered “Miami Ink” in July of 2005 and the show is still running, having ended its third season in June of 2007. The main stars of “Miami Ink” are the tattoo artists and co-owners, Ami James and Chris Nunez.

Ami James of “Miami Ink” has been a tattoo artist since he was 20 years old. James was born in Israel but moved to Miami at the age of 12. When he was 15 years old, he got his first tattoo. James first began his work as a tattoo artist by working out of his home before becoming an apprentice. Before he became a tattoo artist, James served as a part of the Israeli Special Forces. Besides being one of the owners of “Miami Ink”, James also owns a clothing company called Deville USA and the Love/Hate nightclub in Miami.

Chris Nunez, dubbed “the ladies man” on “Miami Ink”, received his first tattoo at age 16. Nunez grew up in Miami, but is of French and Cuban descent. Before becoming a tattoo artist, Nunez began his artistic career as a graffiti painter. Nunez moved to Brazil at age 21 and stayed there for five years before traveling around Europe for an additional three years. The long trip allowed Nunez to work with some of his favorite tattoo artists before returning back to America. Nunez co-owns Deville USA and the Love/Hate nightclub along with his “Miami Ink” co-star, Ami James.

Other tattoo artists featured on Miami Ink include Chris Garver, Darren Brass and Yojiro Yoji Harada. Garver, Brass, Nunez and James all studied the art of tattoos under the late Lou Sciberras, a world famous tattoo artist. The four of them then moved to different parts of the country to open their own tattoo parlors. Then, with the help of TLC, the men were able to fulfill their dreams and open a tattoo shop where they work together as partners. That tattoo shop is “Miami Ink”. Harada is a tattoo apprentice on “Miami Ink” but is also part of a band called Big Deal. Another tattoo artist featured on the show was Kat Von D, who joined the cast of “Miami Ink” in the first season. However, due to personal differences between her and James, she left the show in 2007. Fortunately for her, TLC has given Kat her own show, a spin-off of “Miami Ink” called “LA Ink”.

“Miami Ink” has featured quite a few celebrity guest stars on the show that actually came into the shop to get a tattoo. Celebrities like rapper, Lloyd Banks; the rock group, H2O; and skateboarder, Harold Hunter have all been inked up by the pros at “Miami Ink”. The interesting thing not many people are aware of is the tattoo artists on “Miami Ink” are only in the shop now when the cameras are rolling. So unfortunately, one cannot just walk in at any given time off the street and receive a tattoo from Chris Garver. In order to ensure that a tattoo will be done by one of the artists on the show, a person has to apply on the TLC website, tlc.com.

While “Miami Ink” is mainly about tattoos, it sometimes pushes a little bit deeper than that. Customers who appear on the show usually have some kind of a background story for why they are getting a certain tattoo, in other words, what the tattoo represents to them. Just by seeing the effort and detail that the artists on “Miami Ink” put into their work, it is no wonder they are considered some of the best in the business, worldwide.
