Henna Hair: Color, Dye, And Products

In an attempt to achieve a beautiful head of hair with the most vibrant color, many people are opting to dye their hair. However, looking at the mile long list of ingredients on the back of a box of hair dye can be quite scary. With such a never-ending list of chemicals, it is hard not to think of the negative effects conventional hair color can have not only to one’s health, but also to the environment. Luckily there is a more organic choice when it comes to coloring hair. Henna hair dye is a completely natural way to obtain the hair color many women desire.

Not only is henna hair dye an environmentally friendly color option, it also helps to improve the healthiness of hair. Unlike conventional hair dye, which can damage and fry hair, henna hair dye leaves hair silky and smooth. In fact, henna hair color even strengthens hair, making it less prone to breakage. It is also known to treat dandruff and head lice.

Many people mistakenly believe henna hair color is just for redheads. This dye can actually be used for all hair colors, even gray hair. However, since henna hair color is an organically based hair dye, it does have some limitations. For instance, it cannot transform brunettes into blonds. In order to lighten hair, hair dye requires bleach or peroxide, which is obviously not a natural element.

One supplier of henna hair products is the popular beauty supply retailer, Lush. Lush sells henna hair dye for many desired hair colors. Their Caca Rouge Mama is henna hair dye for aspiring redheads. This henna hair product is made with the following organic ingredients: red henna, cocoa butter, fresh lemon juice, powdered rosemary, and clove bud oil. In fact the only synthetic ingredient in any of Lush's henna hair products is perfume. Lush also offers Caca Noir Mama for dark, black hair, Caca Brun Mama for brunettes, and Caca Marron Mama for reddish-brown hair color. All of Lush's henna hair products can be purchased on their website for $19.95.

Though henna hair dye is a natural product, those interested should still take some precautions before using henna hair products. First, be sure to check the ingredients of the henna hair dye. Avoid any henna hair products containing metallic salts. These are not truly organic henna hair products and can be quite dangerous. Also, be sure to test the henna hair products on a few strands of hair. Doing a hair strand test before using the henna hair products can save someone from a potential hair catastrophe. Performing a hair strand test can also inform the person how long they will need to keep the henna hair dye on in order to achieve their desired color.

After completing the strand test, begin by gradually mixing the henna hair dye with boiling water in a heat safe bowl. Continue mixing the henna with water until it develops a paste-like consistency. Before applying the henna hair dye, it might be wise to apply a cream or oil to the skin surrounding the hairline in order to prevent staining the skin. Next, saturate the hair with the henna hair dye, beginning with the roots and working down to the tips of the hair. Once the hair is completely covered with the henna hair dye wrap the hair with plastic. The length of time the dye should be kept on can vary from one hour to six hours. Typically, the best results are seen within an hour or two. Once time is up, hop into the shower and rinse out the solution. Be sure to rinse the hair until the strands reach the desired color. Afterwards, hair should be shiny and rich with color.

So when deciding to add some vibrant color to otherwise dull and lifeless hair, forget about those conventional hair dyes that are filled with chemicals. Conventional hair color systems are horrible to the body and the environment. Go green, with the natural and healthy choice of henna hair color. It does not fry hair, it fortifies hair!
